The last Samsung phones with a dedicated light-emitting diode (LED) notification light were the Galaxy S9, S9+, and Note 9, all released in 2018. Since then, the trusty LED notification that helped us distinguish notifications (and even dodge them!) vanished.
The closest thing to a LED notification you can have on the Samsung Galaxy A52 and A52 5G today are edge lighting, flash notification, or notch lighting. You can set these natively on the A52’s settings or via third-party apps.
We’ll list how to enable these old-school-LED-like notification lights on your Galaxy A52 or A52 5G. Don’t worry because the steps are just easy peasy, and you can do these in about 5 minutes!

How to Enable LED Notification Edge Lighting on Galaxy A52
We fondly remember that before modern smartphones, many users were already fans of the BlackBerry phone’s similar feature. People continued loving the LED notification light when this feature migrated to the glass slabs – the smartphones of today.
It would vary from user to user, but one of LED notifications’ pros is it helped limit screen time. It was also valuable in distinguishing the actual kinds of notifications you received and if they were worth the time and effort to unlock the phone.
Nowadays, there’s no actual standalone LED notification light on the hardware of the latest Samsung phones, so users are left with three options. These are edge lighting, flash notification, and notch lighting.
Users can set up edge lighting via Settings > Notifications.
On the other hand, flash lighting is best for people with accessibility issues. Thus users can enable it in Settings > Accessibility.
Lastly, notch lighting is a more aesthetically-pleasing version of edge lighting. However, third-party apps from the Play Store are needed to set it up.
In the following sections, we’ll discuss the steps to enable each type of lighting notification available for the Galaxy A52 or A52 5G in more detail.

One way to have a notification light on your Samsung Galaxy A52 or A52 5G is to enable edge lighting. When this setting is active, your Galaxy phone will light up its screen’s edges once it receives a notification.
Enabling edge lighting is the best native method for achieving an effect similar to the notification LED of legacy Samsung phones because you can customise its color and connected apps.
Here’s how to set up edge lighting on Galaxy A52 and A52 5G:
- Open Settings from your Galaxy A52/A52 5G’s home screen or app drawer and tap Notifications.
- Choose whether you want a brief or a detailed notification pop-up style. A brief notification is smaller in size and has less information than a detailed one.
- (Optional) Choose which apps you want to use edge lighting notifications with by tapping Included apps and then toggling on or off each one. The default is “All apps.”
- Tap Brief pop-up settings.
- Select Edge lighting style. The next screen will let you set your desired effect, its color, and other advanced settings.
- Under the Effect tab/submenu, choose the style you like the most, then set the Color, and adjust its transparency and duration using the sliders in the Advanced tab. Tap Done to confirm the lighting style.
Note: Of all the available edge effects, only Echo shows a lighting effect on the left and right sides of the screen. The rest show up below the front camera punch hole/notch.
- (Optional) Set specific keywords to trigger edge lighting in Brief pop-up settings > Color by keyword. Type your keyword/s (1) and change the notification color with the round button (2) beside every keyword you’ve added.
We love this nifty feature because it helps distinguish the type of notification received from the get-go! With this feature, you could set your edge lighting’s colors by app or any other keyword like contact names, tasks, etc.
- Go back to Brief pop-up settings and toggle Show even while screen is off to ON.
If edge lighting doesn’t seem to work, although you’ve already set it up, we highly suggest you check your Galaxy A52’s lock screen settings. It will allow your phone to display notifications even when it’s locked and the screen is off.
Here’s how to enable lock screen notifications (Optional):
Step 1: From Settings, tap on Lock screen. |
Step 2: Toggle Notifications ON and tap on the left side of the same line of the screen to open notification settings. |
Step 3: Toggle Always on Display to ON, so you’ll still receive notifications when Samsung’s Always on Display feature is enabled. |
If edge lighting doesn’t meet your notification requirements, you can try out a notification lighting option created for users with accessibility issues.
How to Enable Flash Notification on Galaxy A52/A52 5G
Difficulty | Easy ●●○○○ |
Number of Steps | 4 |
Duration | 10 seconds |
Flash notification is when your Samsung Galaxy A52/A52 5G’s screen and/or back camera flash gets triggered to light up by an incoming notification. Your camera’s flash will blink while your screen will do the same (with a yellowish tint).
We’re not big fans of this notification type because it lacks custom color options and looks less appealing. However, it’s still great because of its good visibility, which helps users with visual accessibility issues a lot.
Flash notifications can easily catch the average user’s attention when they’re far from their phones.
This is how to set up flash notifications:
Step 1: From Settings, scroll up and tap Accessibility. |
Step 2: Once you’re in the Accessibility menu, tap on Advanced settings. |
Step 3: Select Flash notification. |
Step 4: Toggle either buttons for Camera flash notification, Screen flash notification, or both to ON. |
If you get tired or overwhelmed by blinking lights, there’s another option you can try out. It’s definitely more pleasing to the eye than flash notifications.
How to Enable Notch Lighting on Galaxy A52/A52 5G
Difficulty | Moderate ●●●○○ |
Number of Steps | 2 (minimum) |
Duration | 5-15 minutes |
Notch lighting is a sleek and more customizable notification style for the Samsung Galaxy A52 or A52 5G.
With it, every notification can look like the light is coming directly from around your phone’s front camera punch hole. You can also set it up to light up all edges of your Galaxy A52 screen.
This feature isn’t native to the phone’s settings; you must install third-party apps from the Google Play Store instead. The best thing about using third-party apps is that you’ll get more and better design and color options for notifications.
Some of the most popular notch lighting apps we found are:
- AlwaysOnEdge – Notification LED: This highly-rated app from Alrbea Ent. has over 10 million downloads since its 2018 launch. Its latest release works with Android 8 (Oreo) and up.
- Notification light for Samsung: Jawomo’s notification light app, with over a million downloads since 2019, is another notable option. It works on devices running at least Android Oreo.
- Always On Edge | Lite: This other offering of Alrbea Ent., released in the earlier part of 2022, works even on Android 7 (Nougat) devices. However, this app lacks many features of its older sibling (hence the “lite” tag).
Here’s how to enable notch lighting:
Step 1: Go to the Google Play Store, search for and install any notch lighting or LED notification app (preferably one of our suggestions above). |
Step 2: Open your installed app and work out its settings to set up your new notch (or edge) light notification. |
Note: We used the AlwaysOnEdge – Notification LED app as a sample in the above instructions. However, the actual UI design and settings may vary per app.
Wrapping Up
We still wish for the true LED notification light to make a comeback on future phones, but the edge lighting, flash notification, and notch lighting options currently available to us users are still quite lovely.
Setting up and enabling edge lighting and flash notification on your Samsung Galaxy A52 or A52 5G is simple. Now that you know how to do these step-by-step, we hope you always catch those alerts!
