How to Enable LED Notification on Samsung Galaxy Note 20/Note 20 Ultra

How to Enable Edge Lighting on Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra

Edge Lighting represents a modern twist on the classic LED notifications we knew from older Samsung devices. On a spacious phablet like the Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20, it’s an absolute must-have for boosting your productivity.

The magic of Edge Lighting on the Galaxy Note 20 series? It transforms your device’s curved edges into a vibrant LED notification display, ensuring you never miss a beat.

How to Enable Edge Lighting on Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra

Edge Lighting doesn’t just stop at basic notifications; it offers a cornucopia of effects and customization options, letting you craft notifications that match your style. The best part? It works its magic even when your phone’s screen is off.

This feature works well with Samsung’s Always on Display, providing essential information even when your phone is unused.

The good news is, though the feature has complex and endless applications, enabling Edge Lighting on your Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is easy.

Refer to the instructions below to use your Galaxy Note 20’s screen as a notification light. The steps to turn this feature on vary depending on your phone’s OS version, so we listed two instructions for devices with Android 10 and Android 11 or later.

Since Edge Lighting turns your Samsung phone’s screen into an LED notification light, it isn’t surprising that you can find this feature under the display settings. However, this is only true if your Galaxy Note 20 still runs the older Android 10 OS.

After all, enabling Edge Lighting on the Samsung phablet from its display settings is unique to this Android version. You’ll notice this once we tackle how to allow the Edge Lighting feature on Samsung devices running Android 11 or later.

Despite their differences, the customization options available on both versions are mostly similar. You can adjust the effect’s style, duration, and color, including separate custom options for specific contacts, apps, or notification keywords.

This customization option allows you to identify the source of your notification alerts better. It’s helpful if you’re on the watch for essential emails or employ a specific notification style for urgent matters and emergencies.

Step 1: Go to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Display.

Step 3: Select the Edge Screen option.

Step 4: Turn on the Edge Lighting switch.

Step 5: Open the Edge Lighting menu.

Step 6: Select the Edge Lighting Style option.

Step 7: Select an effect.

Step 8: Click Done to enable the edge lighting feature.

Note: You can customize the edge lighting effect by going to the
Color and Advanced tabs to access more options.

The steps apply only to the particular smartphone OS in your Samsung phablet; once you apply software updates, the exact method may change.

NOTICE: The steps mentioned will no longer apply once you update your Galaxy Note 20’s system software. Newer versions of Android come with the updated One UI for Samsung phones, often changing the menu layout.

Therefore, you must refer to the following instructions to enable your Galaxy Note 20’s Edge Lighting if it’s no longer running on Android 10. Luckily, the instructions below cover more ground, encompassing various Android versions.

As mentioned, setting up your Samsung Galaxy Note 20’s Edge Lighting is similar on Android 11 or later devices. As such, you don’t have to worry about minor UI changes since the settings menu on newer Galaxy devices stays mostly the same.

Therefore, the steps we listed in this section of our guide apply to all Samsung Galaxy Note 20 devices with One UI 3 or higher.

You can go to Settings > About phone > Software information to check your phone’s One UI and Android OS versions.

Turn on Edge Lighting for Android 11 or Later

Use this information to determine which Edge Lighting instruction will work for your Samsung Galaxy Note 20. In this version, you can customize your phone’s Edge Lighting style, effects, and duration, like in the older Android 10 version.

The only notable difference is that you can no longer find this feature under your phone’s display settings, confusing many users initially. Currently, Edge Lighting is under the notification settings.

Although this feature changes your phone’s display screen, it deals primarily with notifications, so this is a sensible change on Samsung’s part.

Either way, you can use the search function on your phone’s settings menu if you can’t find Edge Lighting.

Step 1: Go to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Notifications.

Step 3: Set your Galaxy Note 20’s notification
pop-up style as Brief.

Step 4: Open the Brief Pop-up Settings menu.

Step 5: Select the Edge Lighting Style option.

Step 6: Select an Effect and click Done to enable
the edge lighting feature.

Note: You can customize the edge lighting effect by going to the
Color and Advanced tabs to access more options.

Unfortunately, Edge Lighting on both versions features a limited roster of lighting styles and effects.

You must manually add bonus Edge Lighting effects via Samsung’s Good Lock app, which you can download and install from the Galaxy Store.

Follow the steps below to use the Good Lock to add more customization options to your Galaxy Note 20’s Edge Lighting feature. Samsung develops the Good Lock app, so you must download and install it from the Galaxy Store.

As mentioned, you can enable more Edge Lighting effects on your Galaxy Note 20 via Samsung’s Good Lock app. Previously, there was a dedicated Edge Lighting+ app on the Galaxy Store, but it’s now a part of the Good Lock app.

The Good Lock app is home to all of Samsung’s customization options for their Galaxy devices. It’s where you can change and configure your phone’s keyboard, S Pen, navigation bar, home UI, clock, and more.

Therefore, you must install Good Lock on your Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to access the additional Edge Lighting effects. Fortunately, you may skip installing this app since it comes preinstalled on some devices.

You must only install the app if you recently removed it from your phone or didn’t have it initially.

Step 1: Go to the Galaxy Store and download
Samsung’s Good Lock app.

Note: This system app may be available on your phone natively.
Step 2: Open the Good Lock app.

Step 3: Scroll down and select Edge Lighting+.

Step 4: Enable and select the Set Custom Style option.

Step 5: Choose from the additional Edge
Lighting effects and click Done.

Although Samsung’s new Edge Lighting feature is flashy and customizable, many users miss the classic LED notifications. As such, we’ve searched for a way to enable the custom punch-hole LED notification on the Galaxy Note 20 series.

You can do this using the free third-party “aodNotify” app, which has a pro version with additional LED notification styles. With this app, you can enable the classic LED notification effect if you prefer it over Galaxy Note 20’s Edge Lighting effects.

How to Set a Custom Punch Hole LED Notification on Galaxy Note 20/Ultra

Since the app is free, you don’t have to spend money to get the classic punch-hole LED notification on your Galaxy Note 20. We recommend buying the pro version to access more custom effects or support the app’s developers.

With this app, you can enjoy a trip down memory lane and appreciate the classic Samsung LED notification you have always loved. Unlike most third-party apps, “aodNotify” isn’t plagued with annoying ads, so you can enjoy its features worry-free.

Step 1: Go to your Samsung Galaxy Note
20’s Google Play Store.

Step 2: Go to the search bar to type and search
for the “aodNotify” app.

Step 3: Download and install the “aodNotify” app.

Step 4: Click Open to launch the “aodNotify” app
on your Galaxy Note 20.

Step 5: Click Next to start the app’s
first-time setup process.

Step 6: Click the Select Apps option.

Step 7: Turn on the switch for apps you want to use the notification
light or click All to include every installed app.

Note: Press the back arrow on the upper-left corner
to return to the previous page.
Step 8: Click the Notification Access option.

Step 9: Turn on the “aodNotify” switch to permit the app
to access your notifications.

Step 10: Click Allow to confirm the permission.

Step 11: Set the Always on Display option to “Always on
Display not visible/Only on notification.”

Step 12: Click the Install AOD Manager
option that appears.

Step 13: Turn on the “aodNotify” switch.

Step 14: Click the Draw On Screen option.

Step 15: Go to Installed Apps.

Step 16: Select “aodNotify.”

Step 17: Turn on the “aodNotify” switch.

Step 18: Click Allow to give the
app screen control.

Step 19: Click Done to finish the initial setup.

Step 20: Go to Notification Light to
customize the lighting style.

Note: This option lets you change the style, effects, dimensions,
and duration of the notification light, whether the screen
is on or off. Some effects are only available on
the app’s pro version, which you can buy.
Step 21: Turn on the Notification Preview switch.

Note: This option replaces your Samsung Galaxy S22’s Always on
Display feature for showing basic information when the screen is off.
Additionally, it has low battery consumption.
Step 22: Go to Colors to change the color scheme of
the notification light.

Note: This option lets you set the color to change based on the app icon
and show it alternately. You can also set a specific color for each contact,
app, and battery event (full, charging, or low).

How to Set a Camera and Screen Flash Notification on Galaxy Note 20/Ultra

Difficulty Very Easy ●○○○○

Things NeededA Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra

Aside from enabling Edge Lighting on your Galaxy Note 20, you can use your phone’s entire screen and camera flash as notification lights. It’s possible thanks to the built-in flash notification feature.

We recommend using this feature if you still miss important calls or texts due to Edge Lighting appearing too subtle for you. This way, you’ll notice notifications immediately since your entire screen or camera flash will blink repeatedly.

It’s a helpful feature for Galaxy Note 20 users who prefer functionality over aesthetics, as flash notification is guaranteed to catch your attention every time.

Unfortunately, using your phone’s camera flash or entire screen will likely consume more power.

Therefore, we suggest switching to this LED notification when you absolutely can’t miss any notifications. Otherwise, using the more subtle but flashy Edge Lighting on your Galaxy Note 20 is much better.

Step 1: Go to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Accessibility.

Step 3: Go to Advanced Settings.

Step 4: Select Flash Notification.

Step 5: Enable Camera Flash Notification.

Step 6: Enable Screen Flash Notification.
